Why Freshers Apply for 100 Jobs but Don’t Get Interviews

You apply for a job.

No response.

You apply for another one.

Again, nothing.

After a few weeks, you have applied to 50, 80 or even 100 jobs, but your inbox is still empty.

At this point, many freshers start thinking, “Maybe I am not good enough.”

That is not true.

The problem is often how you are applying, not just what you know.

Stop Applying to Everything

One common mistake freshers make is applying to every job that contains the word “Software Engineer.”

Java developer? Apply.

Testing role? Apply.

Data analyst? Apply.

Support engineer? Apply.

Frontend developer? Apply.

This looks like hard work, but it doesn’t necessarily improve your chances.

If a company is looking for a Java developer with Spring Boot, SQL and REST API experience, your application should clearly show those skills.

Instead of applying to 20 completely different roles, try finding 5–10 roles that actually match your profile.

Your Resume May Be the First Problem

Recruiters don’t have time to read every resume carefully.

If your resume says:

“Hardworking and passionate computer science graduate looking for an opportunity to grow…”

there is nothing wrong with the sentence, but it doesn’t tell the recruiter much.

Compare that with:

“Built a Spring Boot REST API using MySQL and JWT authentication as part of a college project.”

The second statement gives the recruiter something concrete.

Whenever possible, show what you built, what technology you used and what the result was.

Don’t Put 25 Technologies on Your Resume

A fresher’s resume sometimes looks like this:

Java, Python, C++, JavaScript, React, Angular, Node.js, Spring Boot, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, MongoDB, MySQL, Jenkins…

The problem is obvious.

If the interviewer asks you about Kubernetes and you have only watched two YouTube videos about it, the resume has created a problem for you.

It is better to have fewer skills that you can actually explain.

For example:

Languages: Java, SQL
Backend: Spring Boot, REST APIs
Database: MySQL
Tools: Git, Postman
Concepts: OOP, Collections, Exception Handling

That is much easier to defend in an interview.

Your Projects Matter More Than You Think

If you don’t have professional experience, your projects become your evidence.

Don’t just write:

“Created an e-commerce application.”

Be specific.

What did you build?

Did you create authentication?

Did you use JWT?

How did you design your database?

What APIs did you create?

How did you handle errors?

What happens when two users try to purchase the last item?

These details give you something meaningful to discuss during an interview.

Don’t Wait for the Perfect Job

Another mistake is waiting for the “perfect” company.

Your first job doesn’t have to be your dream job.

Your first job should ideally give you:

• Real development experience
• Good exposure to technology
• Opportunities to work with experienced developers
• Something valuable to put on your resume

Once you have 1–2 years of solid experience, your options can change significantly.

The 100-Application Test

Try this for your next 100 applications.

Don’t simply apply and forget.

Maintain a small spreadsheet with:

Company | Role | Date Applied | Resume Version | Response | Interview

After 30–40 applications, look at the numbers.

If you are getting zero interviews, look at your resume and job targeting.

If you are getting interviews but failing technical rounds, your preparation needs work.

If you are clearing technical rounds but losing at HR or managerial rounds, your communication or interview strategy may need improvement.

Now you are no longer guessing.

You have data.

The Real Goal Isn’t 100 Applications

The goal isn’t to apply to the maximum number of jobs.

The goal is to create a process that gradually increases your interview-to-application ratio.

Apply to relevant jobs.

Customize your resume where necessary.

Build projects that you can explain.

Prepare the technologies mentioned in your target roles.

Track your results.

And most importantly, don’t decide that you are “not good enough” just because a company didn’t reply.

Job searching is a process.

Improve the process, and your results can improve with it.
